Hi, my name is Lydia Marino, the new Ranger for Wellington Park.
As is the case for many Hobartians, I feel as if the Mountain is an extension of my backyard, and as the new Wellington Park Ranger I am privileged to play a part in the protection of such a beautiful and significant place. I bring to this position a passion for wildlife and wild places, and a strong will to preserve them.
It is estimated 300 000 people visit Wellington Park each year, mostly concentrated around Mount Wellington. A large proportion (about 130 000) of these are locals, many of whom know the tracks well, and use them extensively. As tourism and local use escalates, the valued aspects of Wellington Park are placed under increasing strain.
The Regulations Awareness Program (RAP) focuses on the protection and preservation of Wellington Park’s ancient geological forms, diverse and unique flora and fauna, hundreds of heritage sites, and water catchment quality. To achieve this we have enlisted the help of Park users, neighbours and stakeholders to keep a watchful eye over the Park and its users. If you would like to discuss or report any issues please contact me.
Finally, as an extension of the RAP, I plan to introduce a community-based fauna monitoring programme in some areas of Wellington Park. Keep posted to the Wildlife Monitoring page for up and coming details on this.
