Wellington Park Management Trust

The Myrtle Forest Site Development Plan was undertaken as a joint exercise between the Trust, Glenorchy City Council, Parks and Wildlife Service, University of Tasmania and the local Collinsvale community.

A key component of the project was a community consultation and user survey carried out by the University of Tasmania. The survey provided valuable information regarding existing use patterns and an indication of desired levels of development.

Various upgrades of the Myrtle Forest picnic area had been undertaken in the past, most notably the renovation of the existing picnic shelter and carpark area, however ongoing vandalism and access issues, along with a desire to increase the site’s value as a tourism asset, resulted in the desire for a planned approach to development options.

The Tasmanian Conservation Trust successfully applied for funding from the State Government Tasmanian Community Fund to implement works proposals recommended in the SDP. A key element of the SDP - closure of Myrtle Forest Road approx. 650m before the existing picnic facilities - has been implemented, with a new parking area constructed at the closure point. Vehicle access to the picnic shelter for visitors with special needs may be arranged via the Collinsvale Store.

Other works recommended by the site development plan have now also been completed. These include: a new toilet and upgrades to the picnic shelter in the Myrtle Forest Picnic area; the construction of a new viewing deck further along Myrtle Forest Creek; and upgrades to the walking track leading on to Collins Bonnet.
