The Fire Management Strategy 2006 was prepared following the 5-year review of the Strategy prepared in 2000, and is prepared in accordance with the Wellington Park Management Plan 2005. Fire is an integral part of the natural processes at work within the Park, however the Trust is also aware of its responsibility to ensure the safety and protection of life and property within and adjacent to the Park.
The aims of the Strategy are to develop consistent policies and operational procedures to minimise the threats posed by bushfires to life and property, ecological diversity and sustainability of natural systems; and to involve the community in fire management within and adjoining the Park.
The Strategy is GIS-based, and contains a wealth of background information on biology, fire history and assets contained within the Park. It was prepared with extensive consultation with Park users, community groups and stakeholder agencies, including the Tasmania Fire Service, Landcare and nature conservation groups.
The Trust employs a part-time Fire Management Officer to co-ordinate the implementation of the fire management strategy. The FMO liaises with member and stakeholder agencies to ensure actions are implemented in accordance with the strategy and the Park Management Plan.
The Trust also prepares an annual Fire Information Sheet, containing information on fire management activities within the Park, and advice on how landowners should manage their property for bush fire safety.
