Wellington Park provides opportunities for the adventurous four wheel driver, usually during the drier summer months.
Four-wheel driving is allowed on nominated trails by permit. Trails are shown on the Wellington Park Access Map and feature spectacular alpine scenery, with technical driving.
A permit and gate key is required for all vehicle access, obtainable from the Derwent Office of the Parks and Wildlife Service (call 03 6233 6560). Permits are generally obtained for short term access during the drier months of the year. All 4WDing access is subject to track conditions, fire risks and permission from property owners adjacent to the Park.
Guidelines and locations for responsible four wheel driving are contained in the Cruising without Bruising brochure, produced in conjunction with 4WD Tasmania.
Other motorised recreational vehicles (trail bikes, quad bikes etc.) are not permitted in the Park due to environmental and social impacts, and the safety of all visitors. Riders of these vehicles should refer to the Ride Around Tasmania booklet, for information on areas throughout the state open to motorised riding. The booklet is available at Service Tasmania outlets and some bike shops for approximately $10.
Cruising without Bruising details the minimal impact code of practice for four wheel drivers. Vehicles should be cleaned before entering the Park to reduce the spread of Phytophthora cinnamomi and introduced weeds. The recently released Wellington Park Hygiene Protocol provides further guidelines.
