In Wellington Park dogs are permitted on-lead in designated areas. The lower foothills of the Hobart and Glenorchy sections of the Park provide established walking tracks and fire trails for dog walking. In the alpine zone at the Pinnacle, dogs are only permitted if confined in vehicles.
The Trust's Dog Information Sheet outlines details for dog walkers.
Dog walkers are reminded to keep their dogs on-lead at all times in the Park to protect the experience of other visitors and local wildlife.
During winter 2006 a dead platypus was found at the bottom of O'Grady's Falls, near Fern Tree. A post mortem revealed the animal was a young female. Injuries sustained included crushing to the chest. Expert advice indicated that feral cats were likely to maul the creature, and that the injuries evident were consistent with a dog attack.
Even well behaved dogs off lead can run ahead of their owners and inadvertently injure or kill wildlife. Please respect our native neighbours and keep dogs on lead at all times.
Information is available on off-lead dog exercising areas in Hobart and off-lead dog exercising areas in Glenorchy.
Please scoop all poop. While having the potential to contaminate nearby waterways, dog faeces also encourage weed growth and are extremely offensive to other visitors.
Authorised Officers frequent Wellington Park and may issue an on-the-spot fine for dog walking offences.
